A 2016 study also highlighted madder's antiviral effects, especially against rotavirus, the most common pathogen responsible for diarrhea in children around the world. According to a study published in the journal Emerging Infectious Diseases, an ingredient derived from the leaves and stems of Madder "effectively inhibits rotavirus proliferation by promoting virus-induced apoptosis within MA-104 cells".

Madder may even have a heart protective effect, according to a 2013 study published in the International Journal of Drug Development and Research. The researchers found that:
