Application

Low doses of red sandalwood (usually 10mg or less in humans) appear to have some cognitive benefits and are considered to be one of the bioactive components of blueberries (along with anthocyanin content). Higher doses may not have the neurologic effects described, but higher doses of Zitanqi (usually in the 250-500mg range) appear to be beneficial in lowering cholesterol and glucose in study animals. The reduction in blood sugar and improvement in insulin sensitivity is so effective that some studies point to it being comparable to metformin as a reference drug.

The sublingual absorption of rosewood had a bioavailability of 25.8+/- 13.1%. Red sandalwood seems to be better absorbed than resveratrol. Although absorption is somewhat substantial at lower oral doses (for polyphenols), higher oral doses appear to actually be better absorbed than lower doses. It can be absorbed under the tongue.

It has been noted that isolated Zidanqi improves cognition in older rats at 0.004-0.016% dietary feeding for 12-13 weeks, and the improvement correlates with the hippocampus concentration of Zidanqi.

In diabetic rats supplemented with 40mg/kg Zidanqi for six weeks, serum triglycerides were reduced by 30% and the efficacy exceeded that of 500mg/kg metformin, but did not fully normalize compared with non-diabetic controls.

25mcg/kg of Zi Danqi can reduce blood glucose by 14% in hypercholesterolemic hamsters, diabetic rats ingestion of 40mg/kg of Zi Danqi for 6 weeks, glucose decreased, accompanied by the increase of insulin; This had a smaller effect in healthy rats (6.3% reduction), while in hyperglycemic rats, Zitan Qi (40mg/kg) was as effective as metformin (500mg /kg).
