1-Deoxynojirimycin (1-DNJ) is mainly derived from the branches, leaves, and roots of mulberry (Morus alba L.), which can be extracted by modern traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) isolation and purification techniques.DNJ is highest in mulberry, and is also found in other plants and microorganisms, such as Commelina communis, Hyacinthus orientalis, Adenophora triphylla var. japonia and Jacobinia suberecta, and microorganisms such as Streptomyces Lavendulae GC-148 and Bacillus.

DNJ is a potent α-glucosidase inhibitor, its absorption is better than acarbose; after entering into the human body, it can inhibit the decomposition of sucrase, maltase, α-glucosidase, α-amylase and other starch and sugar substances in the body, so as to block the absorption of glucose in the human body, inhibit the rise of blood glucose, and achieve the effect of preventing and controlling diabetes. The effect of Deoxynojulin is better than that of sulfonylureas, and the possibility of hypoglycemia and other side effects is much lower than that of other hypoglycemic drugs, which shows that its safety is very good.
